Jonathan was actually involved when David Ragsdale first came to Las Vegas. Jonathan told Ragsdale about an opening in the Jimmy Hopper Band that played for a long time at the Bellagio. Most of that band later became Phoenix. Both bands featured Jimmy Crespo on guitar, a past member of Rod Stewart's Band and Aerosmith.

When I met Jonathan I asked him how he ended up in Phoenix, but rephrased myself and said: "How come you were available ?" Jonathan smiled and thought that was funny because actually he weren't available. In the beginning of 2006 Jonathan had joined drummer Tommy 'Mugs' Cain in his band RadioRage. Mugs is the brother of Jonathan Cain in Journey. He also recorded with Brett Walker. Also in RadioRage was: Dave Whiston, Keith Hubacher, Matt Mackelvie, Spencer James and vocalist Kelly Christian, now in The Verge.

In March 2006 when David Ragsdale got the chance to come back to Kansas and didn't feel like leaving Phoenix hanging, David wanted to try and get them a replacement. He called Jonathan and although he had to bring the news to Mugs Cain, (after only a month in the band) he didn't want to let Ragsdale down and went for Phoenix.
